I must admit this week had its ups and downs and I am not talking terrain or elevation. A couple of highs and the lowest of lows since I started on March the 1st.
Ok so I will admit I am a little of a germaphobe when it comes to certain things. I believe that my little obsession along with a strong immune system keeps me pretty much on the straight and narrow most of the time. I can count on one hand the number of times that I have been sick in the last ten years. I am not being braggadocios, I just feel like my awareness of certain things along with my immune system allow me to steer clear of most things going around. My sanity and system was put to the ultimate test on Tuesday of this week.
My little OCD is making sure that I wash my hands regularly and especially before eating, touching my face, or mouth. I have been described by friends and family, while eating out, as looking like a surgeon who just scrubbed up for surgery when returning from washing my hands after ordering and returning the menu of course. So imagine my hysteria when I went to a new dentist’s office for the first time since moving and watched the hygienist snap on her gloves, and then touch the door, light switch, x-ray machines, x-ray on/off switch, & computer before sticking her hands in my mouth.
I tried to put it out of my mind as quickly as possible and even went for a longer than normal run that evening. I did not realize the damage had been done until the next night when I started getting a headache and a little congestion. I was in denial and didn’t give it much attention until it demanded that I do something about it on Thursday mid-day. I had a splitting headache and low grade fever. I asked to leave work early and rode home slower than I ever had, changed clothes and laid down to rest. I woke up four hours later took some medicine and continued this cycle for the next 24 hours.
Luckily or unluckily, the next day was a holiday so I would be able to get some additional rest if needed. After sleeping the entire day, I woke up on Saturday feeling renewed. I still had a little congestion which didn’t do much for my breathing so I wanted to take it easy on my first outing. I took a casual ride to lunch and back, and then walked to the grocery with my wife later that evening. So for me, this was the lowest point in my journey to date. Granted things can and may get a lot worse but for now that is my baseline low.
Sunday on the other hand was my high point for the week. What better way to spend your day than with family, food, and outdoor fun?
The day began with me breaking my second car free streak at 28 days which is one day longer than my previous 27 day streak. For those of you doing the math that is 55 days and only two trips in a car. Since it was Easter and I would be traveling what better vehicle to take a trip in than one that looks like an Easter Egg, with my daughters permission of course.
Our journey started early in the AM and we headed to Morristown to surprise my mother-in-law by showing up to her church unannounced. She was delightfully surprised and after church I planned to run to her house which was about six miles away. So after a quick Clark Kent change in the front seat of the car in the parking lot, off I went to meet up with the family at the mother-in-laws house.
After eating a great meal and deciding that the children had outgrew the customary hunting of the eggs, We decided to play some back yard games. After playing a couple games of corn hole we decided to break out the big guns and rounded up the game of yard darts. A great time was had by all and now it was time for our next stop which was my family’s house. We went to my sister’s house where they had just returned from a cookout at the park in celebration of her youngest birthday which would be on Monday. We had a really nice visit and then headed home to Knoxville. This brought an end to a wonderful day as we were able to spend time with both my wife and my families.
I closed the week with 82 total miles and got some much needed rest. I am looking forward to starting my next car free streak while gas peaked at the highest it
has since I started at $3.69.
